“Time Well Spent” was made on my final day training under Master Lee Hyang-gu in Icheon, South Korea, after almost three months and around 410 hours of practice at the wheel.

Most mornings, I would walk around the corner from my apartment, coffee in hand, and find Master Lee outside picking flowers. He would greet me with a big smile before the day’s familiar instruction: “Practice, practice.” Between his demonstrations and guidance, I became so immersed in making that hours would pass almost unnoticed.

There were days when my hands seemed to forget everything I had learnt. Master Lee reminded me that those who fail the most succeed the most. I kept returning, slowly learning a new choreography of my hands.

I remember making this jar while laughing with his daughter, whose kindness had helped me feel welcome throughout my stay. As it took shape, I felt my hands beginning to listen to and understand the clay. I still had so much to learn, but something had changed in the way I worked.

Its gently heart-shaped silhouette and soft white glaze bring me back to that feeling. I named it “Time Well Spent” for all those hours: the joy, the frustration, and the growing satisfaction of learning something I loved. Looking back, I wouldn’t take any of it back.
