“Jazz on the Weekends” was made in Korean porcelain and wood fired during my time training under Master Lee Hyang-gu in Icheon, South Korea. It features his studio’s copper glaze, made using a closely guarded recipe.
On weekends in Icheon, jazz would play from the lampposts. It became one of my favourite details of life there: music accompanying ordinary moments between long days in the studio. I named this piece for that memory, and for the same lightness and joy I find in its colours.
Here, the copper glaze reveals a softer palette than the deeper reds elsewhere in the collection. Turquoise flows through pale green into blush red and mauve, with deeper colour gathering in places. Turning the vessel reveals different relationships between these colours, from broad passages of turquoise to delicate red markings emerging through the pale glaze.
Small areas of texture appear across the glazed surface, recording how the copper glaze responded to the wood firing. This variation extends onto a small section of the rim, where there is slight surface roughness, shown in the close-up photographs. These markings give the vessel a surface particular to its own passage through the kiln.
For me, its beauty lies in how it captures a moment in my learning under a Korean master potter: a form shaped during my training in Icheon, transformed by the kiln into colours and surface textures that can never be fully planned. Those colours also bring me back to the music from the lampposts and the small moments of joy between long days at the wheel
