“It’s Bittersweet” was made in Korean porcelain and wood fired during my time training under Master Lee Hyang-gu in Icheon, South Korea. It features his studio’s copper glaze, made using a closely guarded recipe.
Rich reds deepen into burgundy, interrupted by a small flash of green and pale areas where the porcelain appears to show through the glaze. These shifting colours remind me of bruised fruit. Parts of the deeper red glaze have a pronounced orange-peel texture that developed in the unpredictable environment of the wood firing in Icheon, contrasting with smoother passages elsewhere. Each view reveals a different combination of colour, texture and light, recording the variation of the firing across its surface.
I named it “It’s Bittersweet” for the many emotions it brought me: the pleasure of discovering its colours alongside the challenge of letting go of how I had imagined it would look. For me, it captures the unpredictability that makes wood firing so compelling, and the process of learning to appreciate a piece on its own terms.
