“Oscar” was made during my time training under Master Lee Hyang-gu in Icheon, South Korea, where I became his longest-term international student. Its form records a moment in my learning, as repeated days at the wheel gradually deepened my understanding of the moon jar’s curves, proportions and balance.
Part of my Two Lines That Almost Meet series, Oscar explores the possibilities held in an almost. Two hand-painted cobalt lines move around the porcelain surface, drawing close without quite touching. The space between them suggests another life, a different choice, or something that might have been. The meaning remains open to whoever lives with the piece.
Using cobalt prepared in Master Lee’s studio, I painted each line by hand before wood firing. Deep blue brushstrokes sweep across the pale glaze, widening and tapering as they follow the vessel’s curves. As Oscar is turned, the relationship between the lines shifts, revealing a different view of the same almost.
Reserve This Moon Jar
The first completed reservation request received for each available moon jar will be offered the opportunity to purchase that piece.
